Fertility Issues
Count. Motility. Microspheres. Concentration. What do these terms have in common? Well, they’re all related to fertility and the measurement of healthy sperm in a man’s ejaculate.
A new study out of the Netherlands (Segerink, 2011) has demonstrated that a fertility chip can be used in an at-home kit for men to reliably and privately measure sperm count. This “lab-on-a-chip” measures sperm concentration — the fertility standard says that there should be at least 20 million sperm per millilitre of ejaculate and motility, or how healthy and mobile the sperm are. Both are key to predicting the chances of pregnancy, at least for the male’s part.
Here at Psychology Associates we have clinical psychologists who specialize in fertility issues. For more information about our service, contact us. Also, there is a local group in Dunedin who offer support to those who are facing fertility treatments, problems, etc. Their Facebook link is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dunedin-Fertility-Support/189656141115101?sk=info
