Neglect. A huge problem for NZ children.
One study has found that at least 1 in 5 NZ children experiences significant deprivation or neglect. And the effects of neglect can be as bad as the effects of outright abuse.

Neglect, defined as the lack of positive input, or more specifically the continuous failure to provide a child’s basic needs, causes the brain to mature differently leading to various problems like difficulty establishing trusting relationships with others, increased stress reactivity, and learning difficulties.
