Lots of Kiwi adolescents drink lots of alcohol:

Over 60% of secondary school students are current drinkers; over 34% of all students had binge drunk recently; and among current drinking students, over 46% usually drank 5 or more drinks per session (see Youth ’07 study for more stats).

Lots of alcohol can cause lots of problems:

  • Chronic drinking makes the brain have to work harder;
  • Heavy drinking can impact the ability to learn new information;
  • Alcohol may more negatively impact female frontal lobe functioning;
  • Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is associated with high alcohol consumption.
